Telecounselling service for Radiology

Objectives

The objectives of this service are:
- avoiding a double transfer of the X-ray plates from the Primary Care Center to the hospital for the radiologist to look at them and report his/her conclusions and then from the hospital to the Primary Care Centre that looks after the patient together with the report from the radiologist;
- reducing the delay between the taking of the X-ray and the communication of the diagnosis to the patient;
- storing radiological images in the Shared Patient Clinical Records, thus improving access to it from any point of the health area. This will mean replacing the traditional plates with digital images;
- decreasing the pollution caused by the substances used to develop X-ray plates and by the plates themselves;
- reducing costs by eliminating the need to use expensive revealing substances and X-rays plates.

Description

Teleradiology is seen as:
- the performance of simple radiology studies in the patient?s reference Primary Care Centre;
- the digitalisation of images and their transmission to the hospital radiology service for reporting purposes;
- the possibility for the patient?s treating doctor to simultaneously consult the images and the reports of the radiology study.
In the Radiology Service of the participating hospitals, a diagnostic station and a scalable mini-PACS system will be installed. The digital images will be sent to the PACS which will store and disseminate them.
